What to Expect at Your First Murder Mystery Party

A beginner's guide to surviving (and solving) the night.

So, You've Been Invited to a Murder...

Getting invited to a murder mystery party is thrilling, but if you've never been to one, it can also feel a bit intimidating. Will you have to act? Do you have to memorize lines? What if you're the killer and you ruin the game? Relax—here is exactly what will happen and how to survive the night.

Before the Party: Costumes and Prep

You will receive your character assignment from your host prior to the party. This includes your character role, backstory, costume suggestions, and a few secrets. Your only job right now is to find an outfit. You do NOT need to memorize a script. Just get a feel for your character's vibe. (Need help? Check out WikiHow's guide on dressing for a mystery party).

Arriving at the Party

When you walk in, you'll receive either a printed character booklet or a 6-digit Game PIN to join the live party lobby on your phone containing your "Round 1" objectives. These are simple goals like, "Find out why The Ex is angry," or "Confront The Producer about the leaked contract." It gives you an immediate, built-in excuse to walk up to other guests and start talking.

The Golden Rule

"You cannot lie unless your character sheet explicitly tells you that you are the murderer. If you are innocent, you must answer questions truthfully (even if it makes you look suspicious!)."

The Murder & The Investigation

Eventually, someone will "die" (usually dramatically at the end of Round 1). The host will unlock Round 2 and present new evidence—like leaked group-chat screenshots, audio wiretaps, and forensic clues. From there, it’s a free-for-all. You will gossip, accuse, defend yourself, and try to piece together the timeline.

Don't Worry About Being a Good Actor

You don't need an Oscar. In fact, simply reading your clues with a dramatic voice is usually the funniest part of the night. The pressure is low, and everyone is in the same boat. If you're ready to dive in, suggest a modern, easy-to-play game format to your host for their next party!
